The projectile doesn't matter. Basketball, clays — same muscle: form, confidence, reps, competition under pressure. This guide builds the coaching system. Five stations. Five zones. One repeatable shot.
Part 1
Foundation

Trap shooting has one job: put the shot charge in the same place the clay is going to be. Everything in this section is about making that repeatable — not just once, but on every bird, every station, in every condition.

The Load — Check the Box Before You Fix the Swing

Equipment rarely deserves the blame a shooter wants to give it. This is the exception, and it sits upstream of every technique in this guide.

The load on the shelf for season one was 12 gauge, 1½ ounce, #8, at 1200 fps. Three of those four numbers are fine. The shot charge is not.

Free recoil, standard shotshell formula, 8-lb gun. Heavier gun lowers all rows proportionally; the ratio between them doesn't move.

That's roughly double the recoil of a target load, taken 400 times over a season. And it buys nothing. The extra half-ounce does buy one real thing — pattern density at the far end of the window (see the choke section below) — but it buys it at double recoil, and only for birds you should be breaking earlier anyway. Inside 32 yards the density difference is close to irrelevant.

It is also over the ATA limit. The rulebook caps the shot charge at 1⅛ ounces — 1½ is a waterfowl and turkey load, not a target load. A casual summer league may never check, but nothing registered will take it. (The rest of the recipe is legal and sensible: #8 is well inside the #7.5-to-#9 window, and 1200 fps is under the 1290 ceiling.)

Here is why this belongs in Part 1 instead of a gear appendix. The documented result of shooting heavy loads repeatedly is flinch, head lift, and a decline in marksmanship across a session — which is, line for line, the signature miss this guide has been diagnosing as a technique fault. Over the top. Head comes up. Gun stops. You cannot coach that out of someone while the shell is still doing it to them.

Two rounds a night, doubled recoil, sixteen rounds across a summer: an extra 7,500 foot-pounds absorbed for zero additional birds. Drop to 1⅛ oz #8 at 1145 and the guide's technique advice gets a fair test for the first time.

Verify this before acting on it. 1½ oz is unusual enough for trap that it's worth reading the box again — the most common target load is 1⅛, and the two are easy to conflate. If the box says 1⅛, ignore this section entirely and the season-one diagnosis stays where Part 5 puts it: station 1. If it says 1½, this is the cheapest fix available and it costs less than a case of shells.

The Choke, and Whether the Pattern Can Miss

Modified is the right choke. It's the consensus pick for 16-yard singles — dense enough to break birds in the window, open enough to forgive a hold that isn't perfect. Full is tighter than a developing shooter can use and mostly produces frustration. Don't change the tube.

The worry underneath the question is a good one though: if the pattern keeps opening, can I be on a far bird and have the shot go around it?

Yes. It's real, it's computable, and it is not what's costing you birds.

Three pellets is the accepted threshold for a reliable break. Rising going-away presentation, Modified choke. These are upper bounds — real patterns have a dense core, so a centered bird does better than random scatter predicts.

Two things protect you here, and one of them is the load you're trying to get rid of. The heavy charge buys pattern density — that is the one real thing it buys. And steel patterns tighter than lead, roughly one choke's worth, because steel pellets don't deform on the way out. If you're shooting steel, your Modified is behaving like an Improved Modified. Denser, not thinner. The pattern is not going around your birds.

What actually fails at distance is energy, not coverage. A #8 pellet leaving at 1200 fps carries 1.18 ft-lb at 30 yards if it's lead — and 0.54 if it's steel. By 40 yards: lead 0.86, steel 0.34. Steel #8 at 30 yards is already weaker than lead #8 at 45. Pellets arrive, and they arrive without enough left to break the bird.

From the station those two failures are indistinguishable. The bird flies on and you'd swear you were on it. You probably were.

Which means this is a timing question wearing an equipment costume. Everything degrades with range at once — density falls off with the square of the distance, pellet energy bleeds away, and the lead you need grows. All three are fine at 30 yards and all three are marginal at 45. This is the physical reason the OPTIMAL window in Part 2 exists. The fix is not a tighter choke. It's breaking the bird earlier. Tightening the tube would paper over the timing problem and leave it in place.

It also resolves the tension with the load: dropping to 1⅛ oz will thin your pattern at 40+ yards. At 30 yards it barely matters. The heavy shell has been compensating for late breaks. Fix the window and you stop needing to buy the compensation in recoil.
If it's steel, two more things. Modified is safe with steel — Full is not, on any barrel not specifically steel-rated; undeformable pellets and heavy constriction can damage a muzzle. And for the far birds, step up to #7.5, which retains energy better. Note that #7.5 is also the largest shot ATA permits, so it's the legal ceiling as well as the practical one.

Stance

Stand square to the trap house, then rotate your feet slightly toward the side the birds actually travel from that station. Weight forward on the front foot (60/40). Knees soft. Shoulders relaxed — you are not a soldier. You are a hinge. Every adjustment your body makes to track the bird flows through the hips and shoulders; if you're stiff, the gun fights you.

Too wide is a real fault, and it hides. A wide base feels athletic and stable, which is exactly why it survives — it looks like the right answer. But width buys stability by locking the hips, and trap doesn't need stability, it needs rotation. A wide stance will carry you through the mild birds at station 3 and then fail on the one bird that demands a big swing, and you will read that failure as a timing problem instead of a stance problem. Narrow it until you can rotate freely through the full sweep at your worst station without the back foot fighting you. Athletic, not braced.

The Mount — Cheek Weld First

Every miss traces back to here. The cheek weld is where the eye aligns with the barrel. If your face is in the same place on the stock every single time, everything downstream — lead, break point, follow-through — can be consistent. If it's not, nothing else matters.

The drill: Practice mounting the gun without calling for a bird. Gun down, mount, check that your eye is on the rib, unmount, repeat. Do this 20 times before you shoot a single round. The mount is the foundation. Rushing it costs you 3-5 birds per round.

Visual Focus — Both Eyes, Bird, Not Bead

Your eyes should be focused hard on the bird — specifically the leading edge of the clay — from the moment it leaves the house until you pull the trigger. Not the bead. Not the barrel. The bird.

When you look at the bead, the gun slows down or stops. A stopped gun means the shot charge arrives where the bird was, not where it is. This accounts for a large percentage of misses that feel inexplicable — you were sure you were on it, but you were watching the barrel.

Both eyes open. The entire time. You aim a rifle — one eye, hard focus on the sight. You point a shotgun — both eyes on the bird, gun as an extension of where you're looking. Hunters carry the rifle habit to the trap line, and it costs exactly the two things the read runs on: depth perception (binocular vision is how you judge the bird's speed and rise, not just its direction) and peripheral pickup (the squint narrows your acquisition window, so you see the bird later). Less data, arriving later, is the diet anticipation feeds on.

The squint creeps back at the trigger — the rifle brain wanting to close down and verify aim right before the shot. That's the moment to notice it. Home reps: ten gun mounts a night, both eyes on a corner of the ceiling, cheek down, no trigger. You're not practicing shooting; you're practicing not narrowing.

Check eye dominance once before trusting both-eyes fully: point at a distant object with both eyes open, then close each eye in turn. If your shooting-side eye holds the finger on target, you're clean. If it jumps, you're cross-dominant and both-open needs managing (a small frosted-tape dot on the off-lens is the standard patch). Misses that go purely high suggest dominance is fine — crossfire misses go sideways.

The Swing — Swing-Through

Trap uses the swing-through method, not the maintained lead you'd use in skeet. Start the gun behind the bird (or at the house), accelerate through it, fire as you pass the leading edge, and keep swinging. The follow-through is not optional — stopping the gun the moment you fire is the second most common cause of misses.

The gun is always moving. The trigger is pulled at a moment within that movement, not at the end of it.

Where the Barrel Goes During Flight

This is the question that stalls people longest, and it stalls them because the question has a bad premise buried in it. "Where do I put the barrel" assumes there is a place to put it — a fixed distance out in front that you establish and hold. That is maintained lead, and it is how skeet works. It is not how 16-yard trap works.

In swing-through, the barrel is never parked. It is always behind the bird and always catching up. You don't measure a lead; the swing manufactures it. The gun arrives at the bird, keeps going, and the shot leaves during the pass. If you can describe the distance you were holding in front, you weren't swinging through — you were aiming, and the gun had already stopped.

So the answer to "where" is not a distance. It's a relationship, and it has two parts:

1. The barrel stays under the bird — always. The bird rides on top of the bead, never behind it. Trap birds rise, and a barrel sitting on the line of flight covers the bird at the exact moment you most need to see it. Blot out the bird and you are shooting blind, which is why the next thing that happens is your head comes up to look. Head lift is not a discipline problem. It's what a person does when you take away their view.

2. The bead comes up to the bird from underneath, and the trigger breaks while it's still rising. Not when it gets there. While it's moving. You are not placing the barrel on the bird; you are passing the barrel through the bird's lower edge on the way up and out.

Four Football Fields a Second

That's what 1200 feet per second is. A football field is 300 feet. Your shot covers four of them in the time it takes to say the word "pull."

Hold onto that, because it settles the lead question by arithmetic instead of opinion. Run the ballistics on #8 lead leaving at 1200 fps and the shot reaches a bird 34 yards out in about 120 milliseconds. Just over a tenth of a second. In that tenth of a second the clay — moving maybe 45 feet per second by then — travels about five feet.

Five feet sounds like a lot of lead. It isn't, because almost none of it is across you. A trap bird is going away. Only the sideways part of its travel needs leading, and the sideways part is small:

Numerically integrated: #8 lead, 1200 fps muzzle, drag on a 0.09-inch sphere, clay at 45 fps, break 20 yards past the house. The model returns 604 fps retained at 40 yards, which matches published figures for this shell.

Inches. The whole field, and never more than about a foot and a half. The hardest bird in trap — S1-T1, the one that ate your season — asks for nineteen inches. Half the field asks for less than six. This is why measured lead is the wrong tool here: the numbers are smaller than the error bars on anyone's eyeball, and a shooter thinking in feet will shoot in front of every bird on the card.

Read the table once and then put it away. It is not an instrument. It's an argument — proof that what separates a 19-inch bird from a 2-inch bird is how hard you have to swing to catch it, not how far ahead you hold. Which is what the sweep table already told you, in the units your body actually uses.

There is no lead chart in this guide for you to shoot off of, and you should be suspicious of one you find elsewhere for 16-yard singles. The birds are going away from you, so the angular displacement is small, and the coaching consensus is that measured lead at 16 yards is mostly unnecessary — what varies between birds isn't how far in front you hold, it's how hard you have to swing to catch up. That's what the sweep table in Part 2 is actually for. A 29° bird and a 3° bird don't need different leads. They need different swings.

Two things follow, and they're the ones worth taking to the range:

If you're missing a bird and you can't say which direction, you were probably stopped. A stopped gun misses behind and under, every time, regardless of station. Have someone watch whether the muzzle is still traveling at the bang.
If the bird breaks but only chips, you were late. You caught up to it past the window, out where the pattern has opened and the bird has flattened. Move the hold closer to the house and start the swing earlier.

The Pre-Shot Routine

Consistency in the routine creates consistency in the shot. Before calling "pull" on every bird:

1. Plant your feet in the correct stance for this station.
2. Mount the gun — cheek weld first.
3. Set your hold point (see Part 2).
4. Find your focus: both eyes soft in the air 5-10 yards in front of the house, ready to pick up the bird.
5. Call "pull."
6. Eyes first, gun second. At the call, nothing moves but your eyes. Let the bird appear, read its line for a beat, then swing. The hold point bought you that beat — spend it.

The ATA spec: The machine throws birds across a 34° fan — at minimum 17° either side of center — traveling 48–52 yards, 8–10 feet high at 10 yards from the house. The trap house itself is 7½ to 9½ feet wide, which makes it a usable ruler: half the house is roughly four feet. Standard birds. Your hold point, routine, and swing have to work inside that envelope.

Hold Point

The hold point is where your gun is pointed before the bird appears — not where you're looking. Your eyes should be 5-10 yards in front of the house (in the air where the bird will first appear). The gun follows. The specifics vary by station and are built into the diagrams in Part 2.

One universal rule: hold below where you expect the bird to emerge. A gun that has to swing up can track. A gun that has to come down is already behind.

Part 2
The Field

Five stations. One machine. From each position, the machine's ±17° oscillation creates a different range of apparent throw angles. The diagrams below show the first-person view from each station — what you actually see when you step up.

Read this before the diagrams — it corrects an error that ran through earlier versions of this guide. There are two ways to describe where a bird is, and mixing them will cost you a season. Bearing is where the bird sits at one instant. Sweep is how far it travels across your gun from the moment it clears the house to the end of its flight. Bearing is a snapshot; sweep is the shot. Every bird leaves from the same hole in the same house, so at emergence every bird is in the same place — the fan opens after that. A bird whose bearing is small can still be the hardest bird on the field, because it got to that bearing by crossing thirty degrees of your sight picture. Judge birds by sweep.
How to read the diagrams: First-person view, right shoulder, standard bird height. The trap house sits at the horizon, drawn to true angular size — it's 7½ to 9½ feet wide at 16 yards, which is bigger in your sight picture than most diagrams admit. The throw fan opens from it in flat, even gold: every angle inside the fan is equally likely, because the machine oscillates continuously. There is no common bird and no rare one. The gold crosshair is your hold point, where the gun waits — at stations 1 and 5 it sits on the corner of the house it names. The red burst is the shoot point: where the bird breaks, on the center flight line, mid-OPTIMAL band — rising, not peaking. The dark wedge at the bottom is your own barrel. The number on each edge of the fan is that throw's sweep, and the one marked in red is the hard bird.

Naming the Birds

Five throws, numbered left to right, same every station. This is the vocabulary the rest of the guide uses, and it's what makes a heat map worth keeping.

T1 hard left · T2 next left · T3 middle · T4 next right · T5 hard right

Write a miss as station-throw: S1-T1, S3-T3, S5-T5. Two characters on a scorecard, ten seconds a round. "I miss the left ones at station 1" is an impression and it will drift. S1-T1 nine times in four rounds is a diagnosis, and it points at exactly one fix.

Sweep by Station

How far each bird travels across your sight picture, from the moment it clears the house to the end of its flight. Computed from the real field: stations on a 16-yard arc, 3 yards apart, ±17° machine fan. Negative sweeps left, positive sweeps right.

What the table is telling you: the hard bird lives on the outside — the corner stations own the worst angles, and the worst angle at a corner station runs away from the field, not across it. At station 1 the hard bird is the far-left throw. At station 5 it's the far-right. Station 3 is the easiest seat in the house and shooters routinely assume it's the hardest because it's the one that can throw either way.
Station 1 is not "right-heavy." Earlier versions of this guide said it was, and prescribed swinging right on the hard bird. That is backwards, and it is expensive. From station 1 you stand left of the house and look rightward at it, so every bird — including the far-right throw — travels leftward across your gun. There is no right-swinging bird at station 1. If you set up braced for one, the far-left throw arrives needing twenty-nine degrees of left swing you did not plan for, and you will lose it four times out of five. Station 5 is the same error mirrored.

The Optimal Shooting Window

The break zone in the diagrams represents 20-35 yards from the house. This is where the bird is still rising (readable, with momentum), hasn't reached its peak (where it slows and becomes unpredictable), and is close enough that the shot pattern hasn't spread too thin.

Shoot too early and the bird hasn't cleared the house frame — you're guessing at the angle. Shoot too late and the bird is dropping, which means the physics have changed and the lead you've been building muscle memory around is now wrong.

Find the window. Shoot in it every time.

Hold Point vs. Shoot Point

Two different points, two different jobs, and conflating them is where rounds go to die. The hold point (gold crosshair) is where the gun waits before the bird exists — position, not intention. The shoot point (red burst) is where the bird actually breaks: on its flight line, mid-OPTIMAL band, still rising. Between the two points lives the read — the beat where your eyes tell the gun which bird it got. A shooter who treats the hold point as the shoot point is firing a prediction. A shooter who rides past the shoot point is firing at a bird whose physics have already changed. The gap between the crosshair and the burst in each diagram is the whole discipline of trap, drawn to scale.

Part 3
The Feedback Problem

In basketball, a missed shot gives you data: long, short, left, right. You can see the arc, hear the rim, watch the bounce. The next shot is already informed by the last one.

In trap shooting, a miss gives you a sound. One bang where there should have been two. That's all. The clay disappears. The shot charge is invisible. You don't know if you were behind, in front, above, or below — and without that information, self-correction is mostly guesswork.

This is the central coaching problem in trap. The section below builds a diagnostic system.

The Invisible Miss — Head Lift

The #1 cause of misses you can't explain: You lifted your head. The cheek weld broke at the moment of the shot (or just before), the barrel moved, and you have no idea because it happened in a fraction of a second.

Before treating it as a discipline problem, check the load (Part 1). A head that comes up late in a round is often a body protecting itself from a shell that hurts. Heavy loads produce flinch and head lift on a documented schedule. Fix the ammunition first — it's cheaper than fixing a habit, and a flinch built on real recoil will not drill out while the recoil is still there.

When you "peek" — lifting your face to see where the bird is going — the gun moves. It doesn't feel like the gun moves, because the brain is already focused on tracking the bird visually. But the stock drops, the barrel rises, and the shot goes over the top. The bird files on, unbroken, and you felt like you were right on it.

The fix: Keep your cheek welded to the stock through the shot and for a full second afterward. Hear the break (or the miss), then lift your head. Force this habit until it's automatic.

The Anticipation Chain

Before treating anticipation as a fault, find out where it came from. A quarterback who waits to see the receiver break is sacked. You throw before he's open, to the spot he's going to occupy, because that is the only way the ball arrives on time. For a shooter with that background, anticipation is not sloppiness picked up at the range — it is a correct behavior, grooved over decades, running in a game that punishes it. That changes the prescription. You are not correcting a bad habit; you are asking trained expertise to stand down in one specific context. It takes longer, the drills below matter more than they look, and it is not a discipline problem when it doesn't take the first time.

"Anticipatory" is an instructor's word for answering before the question. The machine throws a random angle inside the ±17° fan — that randomness is the whole game — and the anticipatory shooter commits to a guess at "pull" instead of spending the tenth of a second it takes to read which bird actually came out. It rarely travels alone. The full chain, each link feeding the next:

squint → late pickup, no depth → anticipate the line → ride past the peak, head lifts → over the top. One thread. Cut it at the front: both eyes open buys the read, the read replaces the guess, and the bird breaks in the gold instead of under a rising barrel.

Anticipation is mostly rhythm memory — call, beat, bird, every four seconds all night, until the body fires on the meter instead of the target. Three drills attack it directly:

See-only reps: a station's worth of birds where you mount, call, track with the bead — and don't fire. The fastest known cure, because it makes the read the entire job.
Random-delay pull: have the puller wait an irregular half-beat after your call some rounds, so the meter is worthless.
Name the line: in practice, say the bird — "left," "straight," "quartering right" — before the gun moves. If you can't name it, you were about to shoot a prediction.

The Miss Heat Map

Impressions lie; marks don't. For a few rounds, note each miss on the scorecard in station-throw notation — S3-T3, S5-T5 — ten seconds a round. Four rounds is a map. Enough marks in one cell and "I think I miss them over the top" stops being an impression and becomes a diagnosis you can hand an instructor — or check against the table below.

Read the shape of the map, not just the total. A narrow score band — low variance at a fixed level — means the process is stable and one mechanical fix pays across the whole card. A wide band is the one people misread. Seven or eight points of spread across a season feels like inconsistency, like a focus problem, like something that more reps will smooth out. Usually it isn't. Usually it's one or two cells failing hard and everything else holding steady, and the score swings on how many of those birds the machine happened to throw you that round. That is not variance. That is a systematic fault with a random trigger, and no amount of volume touches it. Find the cell. Fix the cell. The band collapses on its own.

Miss Diagnosis by Station

The station diagrams tell you what the bird is supposed to do. If you know the expected trajectory and you missed, you can narrow the cause:

Deliberate Error Practice

The best way to understand what "behind" feels like is to shoot behind on purpose. In a practice round (not a scored round), pick a bird and deliberately aim at where it already is — not where it's going. Note what that felt like mechanically. Then deliberately aim 4 feet ahead. Note that. You are building the kinesthetic vocabulary for "behind" and "in front" that trap doesn't give you automatically.

Once you can feel the difference, you have feedback.

Partner Observation Protocol

If you have someone watching from behind the station, what they see is diagnostic gold. Ask them to watch for:

— Whether the gun is still moving when the trigger breaks (if it stops, you're behind)
— Whether your head comes up before or at the shot
— Whether the shot cloud is visible (the brief smoke of the pattern in the air) and if so, where relative to the bird
— Whether your stance is rotating properly or if your feet are "stuck"

Wind and Environmental Adjustments

When conditions change, adjust the hold point — never the timing or tempo.

Wind from the left (driving hard right birds down): hold slightly lower on stations 4 and 5.
Wind from the right (driving hard left birds down): hold slightly lower on stations 1 and 2.
Headwind: birds fly higher and longer. Hold slightly higher.
Tailwind: birds drop faster. Hold at or slightly lower than your standard point.

Adjustment range: 2-3 inches up or down on the hold point. That's all. Don't change your swing, your timing, or your routine. Adjust the hold point and trust the rest.

The diagrams show standard bird height from the right shoulder. If the birds are running flat and low tonight, bring the hold point down to meet the first appearance of the bird before it has a chance to fly under your gun. Conditions move the hold point — never the routine.

Part 4
Shooter Profiles

Three shooter types have stood on this line so far. All of them can work. The goal is consistency within your own style — not switching between them mid-round. Note the third: you can carry a whole second discipline's wiring onto the trap line without knowing it, and it will masquerade as one of the first two until someone watches you shoot.

Advantage: doesn't overthink the throw angle
Vulnerability: when the mount breaks down under speed, everything breaks down
Vulnerability: the 23→13 drop is nearly always mount or pre-shot routine collapse, not a vision or instinct problem
Fix: lock the pre-shot routine first. Speed second. If the mount isn't the same on bird 25 as on bird 1, the score reflects it
Deliberate / Track

Picks up the bird, reads the throw angle, tracks it to a defined break point
Advantage: more time to read and react to unexpected angles
Advantage: if the mount and hold point are consistent, each shot can be deliberate
Vulnerability: can wait too long and push past the optimal window
Vulnerability: overthinking the throw angle on a bird that's already gone past the break zone
Fix: commit to a break point before calling "pull." Shoot there. Don't let the analysis extend past the window
Hunter / Anticipatory
Example: Derek — 16–19 band, 17 avg · right-handed, right-eye dominant · instructor's word: "anticipatory" (Aug 2026)
Rifle wiring on a shotgun job: aims instead of points, squints down to verify right at the trigger
Moves on the call instead of the read — commits to a predicted line before the bird shows one
Signature miss: over the top. The gun beats the bird to the peak; often the head lifts to watch a break that hasn't happened
The tell: a score band that swings wide while one station fails on repeat. The spread is not inconsistency — it's how many of that station's hard birds the machine happened to throw you
Fix: both eyes open the entire time — you point a shotgun, you don't aim it

The Quarterback Problem

The hero line at the top of this guide says the projectile doesn't matter — basketball, clays, same muscle. That's true about form. It is not true about everything, and the exceptions cost real birds.

Trap looks like pitch and catch with BBs. The throw fan reads as a route tree, the house as a line of scrimmage, and the shot as a ball thrown to a spot. Most of that picture is good. One piece of it is exactly backwards, and it's the piece that runs first.

In football you know the route. In trap you never do. The play was called in the huddle. There is no huddle here, no formation to diagnose, no tendency, no down and distance. The trap house tells you nothing — every piece of information arrives after the bird is already out. A shooter running a pre-snap read is reading a defense that doesn't exist, and the beat he spends doing it is the beat the bird needed.

Which means the position that matches trap isn't quarterback. It's defensive back. A corner doesn't know the route either. He can't anticipate — guess slant on a go and he's beaten deep. He reads the receiver's break and reacts, with no answer available before the snap. Unknown route, read the break, punish nothing in advance.

That's trap, exactly. And for a former quarterback it's the hard version, because it's the position he spent a career trying to beat. It also explains where the eyes go wrong: in football you read the defense, not your receivers. In trap the bird is the only thing on the field. There is nothing else to read, and any attention spent on the house is attention taken off the one object that carries information.

Drop the first half of the picture, keep the second.

Drop: the line of scrimmage, the pre-snap read, and any expectation that you know what's coming. From the call until the bird clears the house, you are a cornerback with no film.

Keep: throwing to a spot. You never asked how many feet to lead a receiver — you threw where he'd be, and the lead was a feeling, not a measurement. That is precisely what the inches table in Part 1 is arguing. Keep the release-in-motion, too: a quarterback throws while his body is still moving, which is the same instruction as "the gun is moving when the trigger breaks."

Keep, hardest: both eyes open. You have thirty years of binocular depth judgment on a moving target, built without a barrel in the way. The squint throws that away. The one round shot with both eyes wide open was a 21 — the highest of sixteen.

One open question, for an instructor and not for this page. This guide teaches swing-through: start behind the bird, accelerate past it, break the shot during the pass. A quarterback does not do that. He throws to a spot, which is closer to maintained lead. That's a live tension between the method written here and the motor pattern already in the body, and "the guide says swing-through" is not an answer to it. Worth asking someone who can watch you shoot.

The general lesson sits underneath the specific one: transfer is not always positive. Thirty years of a related skill hands you a stance, a set of eyes, and a feel for lead — and one instinct that will beat you on every station until you find it and name it.

Station 1 — Deep Dive

Station 1 holds the two hardest birds on the field, and they are both left throws. That is the whole story, and it is worth stating plainly because the intuition runs the other way.

You are standing to the left of the house, which means you are looking rightward at it. Every bird leaves that house and flies downrange — away from your line of sight to the house, which is to say leftward across your gun. All of them. The far-right throw sweeps three degrees left. The center throw sweeps sixteen. The far-left throw sweeps twenty-nine degrees left, more angular travel than any bird at any other station.

So there is no such thing as a right-swinging bird at station 1. If you arrive braced for one — feet rotated right, hold biased right, weight set to swing right — you have prepared for a bird that does not exist, and the two left throws will beat you all night. Not randomly. Systematically. Four of five is the expected result, not bad luck.

Station 1 prescription (right-handed): Hold at the left front corner of the house — roughly four feet left of center, since a regulation house is 7½ to 9½ feet wide — and 1 to 1½ feet above the front edge. Set your feet so that the hard left bird is the comfortable swing and the near-straightaway right throw is the one you rotate back for. You are pre-loading for the difficult bird and giving up nothing, because the right throw barely moves and needs almost no swing at all.

Four misses in a row from station 1, in order of likelihood: (1) you were set up for the wrong direction and the left birds ran away from your swing; (2) the stance is too wide to complete a 29° rotation, so the gun decelerates before the trigger; (3) the mount is breaking down; (4) bird height changed and the vertical hold is stale. Work down that list in order. The first two account for most of it, and neither one feels like a stance or hold problem while it's happening — both feel like the bird was fast.

Station 5 is this same page, mirrored. The hard birds there are the right throws, and everything sweeps right. If station 1 has been the problem, expect station 5 to become one the moment you fix station 1 by over-rotating your default stance left.

The Shared Foundation

Fast shooter and deliberate shooter need different things to fix their problems — but they need the same foundation:

— Same mount, every bird
— Same pre-shot routine, every station
— Eyes on the bird, not the bead
— Gun moving when the trigger breaks

The projectile doesn't matter. The form does. Build the form, and the score follows.

Part 5
Training Arc

The Floor Math

Five stations. Five birds per station. 25 total. If you miss exactly one bird per station — just one — the score is 20. The floor is reachable before your average hits the high teens. You don't need to go 5/5 anywhere. You need to stop losing 2-3 birds per station on the same problem.

Where to find your extra birds: Before the next round, walk through the last round mentally. Which station cost you the most? What did those misses feel like? Mount problem, hold point problem, or window problem? Fix the most expensive station first.

Practice vs. Scored Rounds

Practice rounds are for experimenting. Deliberately shoot behind a bird to understand what "behind" feels like. Try a hold point one foot further left. Shoot every bird from station 3 and notice where the swing breaks down. Use practice rounds to build the dictionary of what things feel like.

Scored rounds are for execution. Pick your routine and hold point per station before you step up. Don't experiment mid-round. Execute what you've practiced and note what cost you.

Season One — What the 16 Scores Say

The first summer league is finished. Sixteen scored rounds, a band from 14 to 21, and a season-long hole at station 1. Reading that honestly matters more than the average does — the average is the least informative number in the set.

The station 1 hole was structural, not personal. Four of five misses from one station, repeatedly, over a whole season, while the other four stations held — that is not a focus problem and it is not a talent ceiling. That is a shooter executing a wrong instruction correctly. This guide said station 1 was right-heavy and told you to swing right on the hard bird. The geometry says the opposite: every bird at station 1 sweeps left, and the two left throws are the hardest birds on the field. You were set up backwards for the two hardest birds, every round, all summer. That cost a season. It is also the cheapest kind of problem there is, because nothing about your shooting has to change — only the page you were reading.
The load is the other candidate, and it may outrank station 1. Season one was shot with 1½ oz at 1200 fps — roughly double the recoil of a target load, taken 400 times (Part 1). Heavy loads produce flinch, head lift and late-round decay on a documented schedule, and those are the same symptoms this guide spent a season attributing to technique. Two causes, one set of misses. The station 1 geometry explains which birds were lost; the load may explain why the rounds fell apart late — the 14 and the 16 more than the 21. Fix both. They're independent, and neither one is expensive.

On the both-eyes experiment: it produced a 21 — the highest of the sixteen — then a 16, and it was abandoned after two rounds. Two rounds is not a result. It's a coin flip, and the dip was the tuition this guide had already predicted and priced. Meanwhile the squint that replaced it went on to produce a 14, the lowest score of the season. The evidence does not say the squint is better. It says the experiment was stopped before it could answer the question it was asked.

But there is one thing the data does say clearly, and it has nothing to do with which is better: "squinting the left eye just a bit" is not a repeatable state. Both eyes wide open is repeatable. One eye fully closed is repeatable. A little bit squinted is a different amount every round, and that alone will manufacture spread in a score band. Whatever gets chosen, it has to be a setting, not a feeling.

Offseason — Five Phases, No Calendar

Deliberately undated. Phases advance when the work in them is actually done, not when a week ends. A calendar is how the last version of this section went stale.

Phase 0 — Read the box
Goal: Confirm the shot charge. Five minutes, no range time, and it gates everything after it.
Focus: If it says 1½ oz, switch to 1⅛ oz #8 at 1145 before the next shell is fired. Nothing else in this plan can be evaluated honestly while the gun is hitting twice as hard as it needs to.
Drill: None. Just read the box and buy the right case.
Phase 1 — Unlearn station 1
Goal: Rebuild the mental picture before touching a trigger. This is free and can be done in a chair.
Focus: Station 1 sweeps left. All of it. Sit with the sweep table until "hard left is the hard bird" is the reflex and "right-heavy" is gone.
Drill: Dry mount at home facing an imagined house. Set the feet so a big left rotation is comfortable and the near-straightaway is what you rotate back for. Ten reps a night. The stance you're rehearsing is the one you narrowed to at the end of the season — keep it.
Phase 2 — Settle the eye question
Goal: One repeatable setting, chosen on purpose. Not a feeling that varies round to round.
Focus: This is the one thing that can be genuinely resolved off the range, in the offseason, for free.
Drill: Dry mounts both ways, cheek down, on a far corner of a room. Check which eye owns the bead without moving the gun. If both eyes open holds the bead where the squint puts it, both eyes wins on repeatability alone and the 21 stops looking like an accident. Give it more than two rounds when the range opens.
Phase 3 — First rounds back
Goal: Not a score. A clean map. Expect the number to be ugly while the station 1 setup is new.
Focus: Miss heat map from bird one. Mark every miss by station and bird type — the whole point is to watch the station 1 cell empty out.
Drill: See-only rounds at station 1 specifically. Mount, call, track the left birds, don't fire. Build the picture before spending shells on it.
Phase 4 — Rebuild the floor
Goal: A floor that holds, which is a different thing than a high score. The 21 already proved the ceiling exists.
Focus: Station 5 — it's station 1 mirrored, and it's the one likely to break once the default stance shifts left.
Drill: One scored round per session, executed not experimented. Every round ends with one line in the log: what cost you. Volume at the old mechanics bought nothing last season; don't buy it again.

Competition Prep

A scored round is not harder than a practice round. The bird doesn't know. The gun doesn't know. You do — and that knowledge becomes pressure only if you let it change the routine.

— Use exactly the same pre-shot routine you've been practicing.
— After a miss: don't linger on it. Step to the next station, reset the routine, treat that bird as the first bird of the round.
— After four misses in a row (the streak): pause longer than normal. Check the mount. Check the hold point. Check bird height if conditions changed. Then shoot.
— After a made bird: notice nothing. Next bird.

Tracking Progress

Score range What it usually means
