Trap shooting has one job: put the shot charge in the same place the clay is going to be. Everything in this section is about making that repeatable — not just once, but on every bird, every station, in every condition.
Equipment rarely deserves the blame a shooter wants to give it. This is the exception, and it sits upstream of every technique in this guide.
The load on the shelf for season one was 12 gauge, 1½ ounce, #8, at 1200 fps. Three of those four numbers are fine. The shot charge is not.

Free recoil, standard shotshell formula, 8-lb gun. Heavier gun lowers all rows proportionally; the ratio between them doesn't move.
Here is why this belongs in Part 1 instead of a gear appendix. The documented result of shooting heavy loads repeatedly is flinch, head lift, and a decline in marksmanship across a session — which is, line for line, the signature miss this guide has been diagnosing as a technique fault. Over the top. Head comes up. Gun stops. You cannot coach that out of someone while the shell is still doing it to them.
Two rounds a night, doubled recoil, sixteen rounds across a summer: an extra 7,500 foot-pounds absorbed for zero additional birds. Drop to 1⅛ oz #8 at 1145 and the guide's technique advice gets a fair test for the first time.
Modified is the right choke. It's the consensus pick for 16-yard singles — dense enough to break birds in the window, open enough to forgive a hold that isn't perfect. Full is tighter than a developing shooter can use and mostly produces frustration. Don't change the tube.
The worry underneath the question is a good one though: if the pattern keeps opening, can I be on a far bird and have the shot go around it?
Yes. It's real, it's computable, and it is not what's costing you birds.

Three pellets is the accepted threshold for a reliable break. Rising going-away presentation, Modified choke. These are upper bounds — real patterns have a dense core, so a centered bird does better than random scatter predicts.
What actually fails at distance is energy, not coverage. A #8 pellet leaving at 1200 fps carries 1.18 ft-lb at 30 yards if it's lead — and 0.54 if it's steel. By 40 yards: lead 0.86, steel 0.34. Steel #8 at 30 yards is already weaker than lead #8 at 45. Pellets arrive, and they arrive without enough left to break the bird.
From the station those two failures are indistinguishable. The bird flies on and you'd swear you were on it. You probably were.
Stand square to the trap house, then rotate your feet slightly toward the side the birds actually travel from that station. Weight forward on the front foot (60/40). Knees soft. Shoulders relaxed — you are not a soldier. You are a hinge. Every adjustment your body makes to track the bird flows through the hips and shoulders; if you're stiff, the gun fights you.
Every miss traces back to here. The cheek weld is where the eye aligns with the barrel. If your face is in the same place on the stock every single time, everything downstream — lead, break point, follow-through — can be consistent. If it's not, nothing else matters.
Your eyes should be focused hard on the bird — specifically the leading edge of the clay — from the moment it leaves the house until you pull the trigger. Not the bead. Not the barrel. The bird.
When you look at the bead, the gun slows down or stops. A stopped gun means the shot charge arrives where the bird was, not where it is. This accounts for a large percentage of misses that feel inexplicable — you were sure you were on it, but you were watching the barrel.
Both eyes open. The entire time. You aim a rifle — one eye, hard focus on the sight. You point a shotgun — both eyes on the bird, gun as an extension of where you're looking. Hunters carry the rifle habit to the trap line, and it costs exactly the two things the read runs on: depth perception (binocular vision is how you judge the bird's speed and rise, not just its direction) and peripheral pickup (the squint narrows your acquisition window, so you see the bird later). Less data, arriving later, is the diet anticipation feeds on.
The squint creeps back at the trigger — the rifle brain wanting to close down and verify aim right before the shot. That's the moment to notice it. Home reps: ten gun mounts a night, both eyes on a corner of the ceiling, cheek down, no trigger. You're not practicing shooting; you're practicing not narrowing.
Trap uses the swing-through method, not the maintained lead you'd use in skeet. Start the gun behind the bird (or at the house), accelerate through it, fire as you pass the leading edge, and keep swinging. The follow-through is not optional — stopping the gun the moment you fire is the second most common cause of misses.
The gun is always moving. The trigger is pulled at a moment within that movement, not at the end of it.
This is the question that stalls people longest, and it stalls them because the question has a bad premise buried in it. "Where do I put the barrel" assumes there is a place to put it — a fixed distance out in front that you establish and hold. That is maintained lead, and it is how skeet works. It is not how 16-yard trap works.
In swing-through, the barrel is never parked. It is always behind the bird and always catching up. You don't measure a lead; the swing manufactures it. The gun arrives at the bird, keeps going, and the shot leaves during the pass. If you can describe the distance you were holding in front, you weren't swinging through — you were aiming, and the gun had already stopped.
So the answer to "where" is not a distance. It's a relationship, and it has two parts:
That's what 1200 feet per second is. A football field is 300 feet. Your shot covers four of them in the time it takes to say the word "pull."
Hold onto that, because it settles the lead question by arithmetic instead of opinion. Run the ballistics on #8 lead leaving at 1200 fps and the shot reaches a bird 34 yards out in about 120 milliseconds. Just over a tenth of a second. In that tenth of a second the clay — moving maybe 45 feet per second by then — travels about five feet.
Five feet sounds like a lot of lead. It isn't, because almost none of it is across you. A trap bird is going away. Only the sideways part of its travel needs leading, and the sideways part is small:

Numerically integrated: #8 lead, 1200 fps muzzle, drag on a 0.09-inch sphere, clay at 45 fps, break 20 yards past the house. The model returns 604 fps retained at 40 yards, which matches published figures for this shell.
There is no lead chart in this guide for you to shoot off of, and you should be suspicious of one you find elsewhere for 16-yard singles. The birds are going away from you, so the angular displacement is small, and the coaching consensus is that measured lead at 16 yards is mostly unnecessary — what varies between birds isn't how far in front you hold, it's how hard you have to swing to catch up. That's what the sweep table in Part 2 is actually for. A 29° bird and a 3° bird don't need different leads. They need different swings.
Two things follow, and they're the ones worth taking to the range:
— If you're missing a bird and you can't say which direction, you were probably stopped. A stopped gun misses behind and under, every time, regardless of station. Have someone watch whether the muzzle is still traveling at the bang.
— If the bird breaks but only chips, you were late. You caught up to it past the window, out where the pattern has opened and the bird has flattened. Move the hold closer to the house and start the swing earlier.
Consistency in the routine creates consistency in the shot. Before calling "pull" on every bird:
1. Plant your feet in the correct stance for this station.
2. Mount the gun — cheek weld first.
3. Set your hold point (see Part 2).
4. Find your focus: both eyes soft in the air 5-10 yards in front of the house, ready to pick up the bird.
5. Call "pull."
6. Eyes first, gun second. At the call, nothing moves but your eyes. Let the bird appear, read its line for a beat, then swing. The hold point bought you that beat — spend it.
The hold point is where your gun is pointed before the bird appears — not where you're looking. Your eyes should be 5-10 yards in front of the house (in the air where the bird will first appear). The gun follows. The specifics vary by station and are built into the diagrams in Part 2.
One universal rule: hold below where you expect the bird to emerge. A gun that has to swing up can track. A gun that has to come down is already behind.
Five stations. One machine. From each position, the machine's ±17° oscillation creates a different range of apparent throw angles. The diagrams below show the first-person view from each station — what you actually see when you step up.
Five throws, numbered left to right, same every station. This is the vocabulary the rest of the guide uses, and it's what makes a heat map worth keeping.

Write a miss as station-throw: S1-T1, S3-T3, S5-T5. Two characters on a scorecard, ten seconds a round. "I miss the left ones at station 1" is an impression and it will drift. S1-T1 nine times in four rounds is a diagnosis, and it points at exactly one fix.
How far each bird travels across your sight picture, from the moment it clears the house to the end of its flight. Computed from the real field: stations on a 16-yard arc, 3 yards apart, ±17° machine fan. Negative sweeps left, positive sweeps right.

The break zone in the diagrams represents 20-35 yards from the house. This is where the bird is still rising (readable, with momentum), hasn't reached its peak (where it slows and becomes unpredictable), and is close enough that the shot pattern hasn't spread too thin.
Shoot too early and the bird hasn't cleared the house frame — you're guessing at the angle. Shoot too late and the bird is dropping, which means the physics have changed and the lead you've been building muscle memory around is now wrong.
Find the window. Shoot in it every time.
Two different points, two different jobs, and conflating them is where rounds go to die. The hold point (gold crosshair) is where the gun waits before the bird exists — position, not intention. The shoot point (red burst) is where the bird actually breaks: on its flight line, mid-OPTIMAL band, still rising. Between the two points lives the read — the beat where your eyes tell the gun which bird it got. A shooter who treats the hold point as the shoot point is firing a prediction. A shooter who rides past the shoot point is firing at a bird whose physics have already changed. The gap between the crosshair and the burst in each diagram is the whole discipline of trap, drawn to scale.

In basketball, a missed shot gives you data: long, short, left, right. You can see the arc, hear the rim, watch the bounce. The next shot is already informed by the last one.
In trap shooting, a miss gives you a sound. One bang where there should have been two. That's all. The clay disappears. The shot charge is invisible. You don't know if you were behind, in front, above, or below — and without that information, self-correction is mostly guesswork.
This is the central coaching problem in trap. The section below builds a diagnostic system.
When you "peek" — lifting your face to see where the bird is going — the gun moves. It doesn't feel like the gun moves, because the brain is already focused on tracking the bird visually. But the stock drops, the barrel rises, and the shot goes over the top. The bird files on, unbroken, and you felt like you were right on it.
The fix: Keep your cheek welded to the stock through the shot and for a full second afterward. Hear the break (or the miss), then lift your head. Force this habit until it's automatic.
"Anticipatory" is an instructor's word for answering before the question. The machine throws a random angle inside the ±17° fan — that randomness is the whole game — and the anticipatory shooter commits to a guess at "pull" instead of spending the tenth of a second it takes to read which bird actually came out. It rarely travels alone. The full chain, each link feeding the next:
Anticipation is mostly rhythm memory — call, beat, bird, every four seconds all night, until the body fires on the meter instead of the target. Three drills attack it directly:
— See-only reps: a station's worth of birds where you mount, call, track with the bead — and don't fire. The fastest known cure, because it makes the read the entire job.
— Random-delay pull: have the puller wait an irregular half-beat after your call some rounds, so the meter is worthless.
— Name the line: in practice, say the bird — "left," "straight," "quartering right" — before the gun moves. If you can't name it, you were about to shoot a prediction.
Impressions lie; marks don't. For a few rounds, note each miss on the scorecard in station-throw notation — S3-T3, S5-T5 — ten seconds a round. Four rounds is a map. Enough marks in one cell and "I think I miss them over the top" stops being an impression and becomes a diagnosis you can hand an instructor — or check against the table below.
Read the shape of the map, not just the total. A narrow score band — low variance at a fixed level — means the process is stable and one mechanical fix pays across the whole card. A wide band is the one people misread. Seven or eight points of spread across a season feels like inconsistency, like a focus problem, like something that more reps will smooth out. Usually it isn't. Usually it's one or two cells failing hard and everything else holding steady, and the score swings on how many of those birds the machine happened to throw you that round. That is not variance. That is a systematic fault with a random trigger, and no amount of volume touches it. Find the cell. Fix the cell. The band collapses on its own.
The station diagrams tell you what the bird is supposed to do. If you know the expected trajectory and you missed, you can narrow the cause:

The best way to understand what "behind" feels like is to shoot behind on purpose. In a practice round (not a scored round), pick a bird and deliberately aim at where it already is — not where it's going. Note what that felt like mechanically. Then deliberately aim 4 feet ahead. Note that. You are building the kinesthetic vocabulary for "behind" and "in front" that trap doesn't give you automatically.
Once you can feel the difference, you have feedback.
If you have someone watching from behind the station, what they see is diagnostic gold. Ask them to watch for:
— Whether the gun is still moving when the trigger breaks (if it stops, you're behind)
— Whether your head comes up before or at the shot
— Whether the shot cloud is visible (the brief smoke of the pattern in the air) and if so, where relative to the bird
— Whether your stance is rotating properly or if your feet are "stuck"
When conditions change, adjust the hold point — never the timing or tempo.
The diagrams show standard bird height from the right shoulder. If the birds are running flat and low tonight, bring the hold point down to meet the first appearance of the bird before it has a chance to fly under your gun. Conditions move the hold point — never the routine.
Three shooter types have stood on this line so far. All of them can work. The goal is consistency within your own style — not switching between them mid-round. Note the third: you can carry a whole second discipline's wiring onto the trap line without knowing it, and it will masquerade as one of the first two until someone watches you shoot.
The hero line at the top of this guide says the projectile doesn't matter — basketball, clays, same muscle. That's true about form. It is not true about everything, and the exceptions cost real birds.
Trap looks like pitch and catch with BBs. The throw fan reads as a route tree, the house as a line of scrimmage, and the shot as a ball thrown to a spot. Most of that picture is good. One piece of it is exactly backwards, and it's the piece that runs first.
Which means the position that matches trap isn't quarterback. It's defensive back. A corner doesn't know the route either. He can't anticipate — guess slant on a go and he's beaten deep. He reads the receiver's break and reacts, with no answer available before the snap. Unknown route, read the break, punish nothing in advance.
That's trap, exactly. And for a former quarterback it's the hard version, because it's the position he spent a career trying to beat. It also explains where the eyes go wrong: in football you read the defense, not your receivers. In trap the bird is the only thing on the field. There is nothing else to read, and any attention spent on the house is attention taken off the one object that carries information.
One open question, for an instructor and not for this page. This guide teaches swing-through: start behind the bird, accelerate past it, break the shot during the pass. A quarterback does not do that. He throws to a spot, which is closer to maintained lead. That's a live tension between the method written here and the motor pattern already in the body, and "the guide says swing-through" is not an answer to it. Worth asking someone who can watch you shoot.
The general lesson sits underneath the specific one: transfer is not always positive. Thirty years of a related skill hands you a stance, a set of eyes, and a feel for lead — and one instinct that will beat you on every station until you find it and name it.
Station 1 holds the two hardest birds on the field, and they are both left throws. That is the whole story, and it is worth stating plainly because the intuition runs the other way.
You are standing to the left of the house, which means you are looking rightward at it. Every bird leaves that house and flies downrange — away from your line of sight to the house, which is to say leftward across your gun. All of them. The far-right throw sweeps three degrees left. The center throw sweeps sixteen. The far-left throw sweeps twenty-nine degrees left, more angular travel than any bird at any other station.
So there is no such thing as a right-swinging bird at station 1. If you arrive braced for one — feet rotated right, hold biased right, weight set to swing right — you have prepared for a bird that does not exist, and the two left throws will beat you all night. Not randomly. Systematically. Four of five is the expected result, not bad luck.
Four misses in a row from station 1, in order of likelihood: (1) you were set up for the wrong direction and the left birds ran away from your swing; (2) the stance is too wide to complete a 29° rotation, so the gun decelerates before the trigger; (3) the mount is breaking down; (4) bird height changed and the vertical hold is stale. Work down that list in order. The first two account for most of it, and neither one feels like a stance or hold problem while it's happening — both feel like the bird was fast.
Fast shooter and deliberate shooter need different things to fix their problems — but they need the same foundation:
— Same mount, every bird
— Same pre-shot routine, every station
— Eyes on the bird, not the bead
— Gun moving when the trigger breaks
The projectile doesn't matter. The form does. Build the form, and the score follows.
Five stations. Five birds per station. 25 total. If you miss exactly one bird per station — just one — the score is 20. The floor is reachable before your average hits the high teens. You don't need to go 5/5 anywhere. You need to stop losing 2-3 birds per station on the same problem.
Practice rounds are for experimenting. Deliberately shoot behind a bird to understand what "behind" feels like. Try a hold point one foot further left. Shoot every bird from station 3 and notice where the swing breaks down. Use practice rounds to build the dictionary of what things feel like.
Scored rounds are for execution. Pick your routine and hold point per station before you step up. Don't experiment mid-round. Execute what you've practiced and note what cost you.
The first summer league is finished. Sixteen scored rounds, a band from 14 to 21, and a season-long hole at station 1. Reading that honestly matters more than the average does — the average is the least informative number in the set.
On the both-eyes experiment: it produced a 21 — the highest of the sixteen — then a 16, and it was abandoned after two rounds. Two rounds is not a result. It's a coin flip, and the dip was the tuition this guide had already predicted and priced. Meanwhile the squint that replaced it went on to produce a 14, the lowest score of the season. The evidence does not say the squint is better. It says the experiment was stopped before it could answer the question it was asked.
But there is one thing the data does say clearly, and it has nothing to do with which is better: "squinting the left eye just a bit" is not a repeatable state. Both eyes wide open is repeatable. One eye fully closed is repeatable. A little bit squinted is a different amount every round, and that alone will manufacture spread in a score band. Whatever gets chosen, it has to be a setting, not a feeling.
Deliberately undated. Phases advance when the work in them is actually done, not when a week ends. A calendar is how the last version of this section went stale.
A scored round is not harder than a practice round. The bird doesn't know. The gun doesn't know. You do — and that knowledge becomes pressure only if you let it change the routine.
— Use exactly the same pre-shot routine you've been practicing.
— After a miss: don't linger on it. Step to the next station, reset the routine, treat that bird as the first bird of the round.
— After four misses in a row (the streak): pause longer than normal. Check the mount. Check the hold point. Check bird height if conditions changed. Then shoot.
— After a made bird: notice nothing. Next bird.
